Interview Josef Franz Thiel - predoctoral studies I

This conversation with Professor em. Josef Franz Thiel took place on March 3, 2009 at his home in Frankfurt/Main.

Born in Vojvodina in former Yugoslavia in 1932, Prof. Thiel tells us about his upbringing in a multi-ethnic environment, about his experiences during the war years and his escape to Austria In 1947. After completing his secondary education, Prof. Thiel goes to Sankt Gabriel near Vienna to become a missionary. This is where he gets into contact with Paul Schebesta, who inspires him to take up the study of anthropology in Vienna. Prof. Thiel tells us about the situation of anthropology in Vienna at the time, about his studies and work as both, a missionary and an anthropologist, in Austria, Africa, France and Germany, and about his time as the editor of the Anthropos journal.
