Interview Bernhard Streck - doctoral and postdoctoral activities

This conversation with Professor em. Bernhard Streck took place on February 27, 2008 at Leipzig University.

Professor Streck tells us about his upbringing in a small community in Southern Germany and about his childhood fascination with the terrific grimaces of the malangans in the Basel museum. Raised in an environment of Humboldtian and pietist education ideals, his first route of escape leads him to the armed forces, the second to the study of Völkerkunde in Basel, and from there on to Frankfurt, the hub of the student movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. In Frankfurt, he studies the colonial exploration of Africa as well as Marx, before receiving his PhD in 1975. Another escape route leads him to the Sahara, and later to Sudan, before taking up academic positions in Gießen, Berlin, and Leipzig.
