Interview Ulla Johansen

This conversation with Professor em. Ulla Johansen took place on January 29, 2008 at her home near Cologne.

In this interview Professor Johansen provides several interesting insights on the development of anthropology in post-war Germany. As one of the few influential women in the field, we learn how she first came to study Völkerkunde in Hamburg and about how her professional life was regarded a luxury at the time. In contrast to most of her peers, she does not specialize on America, the field of her teacher Franz Termer, but – inspired by her personal background and family history – chooses to work on Siberia and Turkey, instead. Her academic interests lead her first into the museum, later into the university environment.
